Topographic Maps: Falls

County Maps:
Jefferson, Elk
Description: This
is a swift flowing flat-water stream with some sharp bends. It traverses
backyards part of the way, then it is nestled in a flood plain, away from
buildings until it gets to Brockway, where it is contained in a flood control
channel. [Reported 1997]
Difficulties:
Watch out for strainers at the bends
Shuttle: To reach
the put-in, take State Route 219 north from Brockway to
State Route 153. Turn right/east onto State Route 153 and
go to the put‑in bridge. The take‑out in Brockway is close to the
Little Toby-Clarion Bike Trailhead. To reach the take‑out, return to
State Route 219 and go south to Brockway. In Brockway at the
intersection with State Route 28 at the Sheetz, continue straight
onto State Route 28 west. Go several blocks to 7th Avenue. Turn
right/north onto 7th Avenue and go a few blocks through Taylor Park, past
several ball fields and park in the trailhead parking across from a lake.
Gauge: None. If
the shallows at the State Route 153 Bridge are passable then it is
okay.
Normal Wet Period:
No available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should
normally be runnable approximately March.

Topographic Maps: Carman
County Maps: Jefferson,
Elk
Description: This
scenic stream runs through mixed hardwood forests north into the Clarion River
near Portland Mills. For the most part it runs as a Class I stream through a
steep, wooded valley about 500 feet deep. It starts out in Brockway as a
flat stream with levees, which soon turn into open woods. The stream bed is
sand and gravel, but boulders in the creek form Class I rapids. Much of the surrounding
land is State Game Lands. [Checked 2001]
Difficulties: This
creek needs a lot of water to be enjoyable. The first couple of miles are
narrow with some strainers blocking the entire stream.
Shuttle: Put in in
Brockway at the bridge close to the Little Toby-Clarion bike trail. To reach
the put-in turn north off of State Route 28 onto Seventh Avenue. Go a
few blocks through Taylor Park, past several ball fields and park in the
trailhead parking across from a lake. An alternate put-in that avoids some of
the strainers is 2 miles down the creek at the Jenkins Run trailhead of the
bike path. To get to Jenkins Run continue past the lake and trailhead parking.
Go about 2 miles to the put-in. To reach the take-out, return to
State Route 28. Turn right/south. Go to the Post Office and turn
right/north on Clay Point Road. At the “T” with State Route 1010,
turn right. Follow 1010 until it ends in Blowtown and turn right on
State Route 4005. Continue on State Route 4005, which
becomes State Route 949 in Green Briar. Follow 949 to the river just
past Portland Mills.
Gauges: Wilcox.
This gauge on nearby West Branch of the Clarion River will probably read above
2.0 feet.
Normal Wet Period: No
available statistics on seasons. Since this section is small, it should
normally be runnable approximately January through April.
